The Calgary Folk Music Festival last weekend had a great lineup of artists including Chris Isaak (of Heart Shaped World fame), Iron & Wine (one of my faves) and Serena Ryder, whose song “Weak in the Knees” is on my Top 25 Most Played list in iTunes.

In a recent TV interview, Serena was sporting her “Bonnie” heart tattoo – a tribute to her manager of six years, Bonnie O’Donnell, who died of pneumonia in January 2008.

Serena also has a pair of tiny heart tattoos on the backs of her hands (on the skin between her thumbs and forefingers). You can see one of them in the image above, and the other below as she hoists her 2009 Juno Award for Adult Alternative Album of the Year.

Another entry from enthusiastic heart-spotter Darren L.:

Even though we said no gifts for our 25th wedding anniversary party, we really appreciated this thoughtful one. The saying inscribed inside the bowl: “The best things in life are shared.” Oh, and check out the shape of the spoon handles!

These are the perfect spoons, of course, for Darren to use when he eats his heart-shaped cereal.

It was 72 days ago – May 17 – that I started seeing hearts in the Grand Canyon…the inspiration for My Heart Shaped World.

Ten days later I started this blog, which has been gathering a small but faithful following. And from my readers, I keep hearing a now-familar refrain: “I can’t go anywhere now without seeing hearts. It’s incredible. And so much fun!”

Such comments remind me what my blog, at heart, is all about.

It’s about opening your eyes. Becoming attuned to the world around you. Opening your mind to deeper meanings. Being mindful. Being present. Feeling loved.

When I was in the Canyon, there was nowhere else I could be. There was nothing competing for my attention but the ground beneath my boots and the landscape that embraced me. I was fully tuned in to the moment, and my heart was full of joy and love and gratitude. And that, I’ve come to realize, is when the magic happens.

In the unrelenting whirligig of life – the mile-a-minute madness of the daily grind – it’s so easy to let everything but your daunting To-Do List swirl into blur.

Slow down. Look around you. Open your heart and open your eyes, and you will see what we see…

A heart-shaped world.

Found myself behind this bus in Calgary yesterday afternoon. Note the license plate. With no back window, I couldn’t tell what was going on inside…

Love/luv is all around you!

From Sylvia W.:

I found it by the seaside and keep it on my desk…a reminder when I’m working of how much more fun it is to be hunting for seashells in the sand. And how much I love the feel of sand between my toes!
